May 10, 1950: coup d’état against President Dumarsais Estimé
President Estimé, after trying to revise the Constitution to ensure his re-election, was forced to resign and replaced by a military junta composed of General Franck Lavaud, Colonels Antoine Levelt and Paul Eugène Magloire, which immediately got rid of the two legislative bodies.
Estimé died in New York on July 20, 1953. Elected on August 16, 1946, he spent 3 years, 8 months and 24 days at the head of the country.
