May 11, 1796 : Arrival of the third civil commission in Santo Domingo. Composed of Sonthonax, Roume, Giraud, Leblanc, and Julien Raymond and accompanied by several hundred soldiers, this civil commission formed by the Directory on January 23, 1796 was responsible for reestablishing the authority of France called into question by the different components of colonial society.

May 11, 1994 : the military appoint Emile Jonassaint, provisional president of Haiti. Jonassaint formed a government composed of 12 ministers, all civilians. He remained in power until October 12, 1994. After retiring from public life, he died on October 24, 1995 in Port-au-Prince at the age of 82.

May 11, 2008 : the Haitian coast guard recovered around ten bodies of people who had drowned following the sinking of their boat, off the coast of Merger, around fifteen km south of Port-au-Prince on the evening of May 10. The small boat was returning from Pestel and heading towards the capital.
