Former Haitian soccer star Serge Ducoste was given a state funeral attended by members of the Presidential Transitional Council (CPT), the interim director general of the Haitian National Police (PNH), the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Haiti (FAd’H), Louis Jodel Lessage, and former senator Pierre-Paul Patrice Dumond, among others.

Authorities of the transitional power, members of the sports community, former players of the national football team gathered this Saturday at the Saint-Pierre Church in Pétion-Ville to pay a final tribute to Serge Ducoste, who died on January 5 in Port-au-Prince. In his homily for the occasion, Father Edner Cassis praised the exemplary career of a soul who had put himself at the service of Haitian football. He also sent a message to Providence for having allowed this talent to enhance the king of sports in Haiti.

The Minister of Youth, Sports and Civic Action, Niola Lynn Sarah Dévalis Octavius, expressed the Haitian state’s unparalleled recognition of Serge Ducoste. Retracing the late man’s impressive career, she emphasized that he was the best central defender of his era.

For his part, former senator Pierre-Paul Patrice Dumond believes that it is the duty and obligation of the Haitian state to pay a well-deserved tribute to Serge Ducoste. He recalls that the former Haitian star was part of the team that participated in the great epic of 1974, allowing Haiti to participate in its only World Cup. Other artisans of this performance at the World Cup also deserve many tributes.

The funeral of Serge Ducoste (80 years old) took place in the presence of the President-Counsellor, engineer Edgard Leblanc Fils, the Minister of Justice and Public Security, Carlos Hercule, former Haitian internationals Philippe Vorbe, Mario Léandre, the Chief Inspector General of the PNH, Fritz Saint-Fort, as well as club leaders, among others.
