COMMUNIQUÉ
The Democratic and Popular Sector (SDP) welcomes the deployment in Haiti of the First Contingent of the Multinational Security Support Force this Tuesday, June 25, 2024. The SDP recalls, for history and for the truth, that the request for this Force was initiated in October 2022 under the Government of Doctor Ariel Henry, by letter addressed to the Secretary General of the United Nations, after noting the inability of the Haitian State to deal with the growing insecurity plaguing the Country. Furthermore, it took 12 months of diplomatic battle for Prime Minister Ariel Henry and his political allies to obtain authorization from the United Nations Security Council on October 2, 2023.
Five (5) months later, Prime Minister Ariel Henry traveled to Nairobi, East Africa, to sign, on behalf of the Republic of Haiti, the reciprocity agreement with Kenya, on 1 March 2024, in accordance with the decision of the Supreme Court of this Country.
There were substantial delays in the deployment of this force since many of those in power today had fought the decision to bring the force to Haiti for political reasons. But, fortunately for the country, once in power, they quickly agreed on the need for this force. Better late than never!
The SDP hopes for the full deployment of the Force in the not too distant future to facilitate, in concert with the PNH, the free movement of people and goods throughout the Country, the resumption of socio-economic and cultural life, the return forcibly displaced people and the organization of the next general elections in the country.
The SDP’s position is clear: No dialogue with gangs! No amnesty for gangs!
