Reaffirming her commitment to a safe environment for women and girls, Minister Marie Françoise Suzan participated in the signing of a memorandum of understanding between UN Women and the Haitian National Police (PNH) this Thursday, July 25, 2024, reports a press release from the Ministry for the Status of Women and Women’s Rights.

In the presence of senior PNH dignitaries, representatives of United Nations agencies and members of civil society, this partnership aims to strengthen the operational capacities of police response services. The memorandum of understanding will support the Coordination of Women’s Affairs and Gender Issues, the Unit for the Fight against Sexual Crimes (ULCS) and the Brigade for the Protection of Minors (BPM). The main objective is to ensure better support for victims and facilitate the availability of disaggregated data on gender-based violence, specifies the press release consulted by Loop.

In her speech, Minister Marie Françoise Suzan stressed that this event constitutes a decisive step towards an environment where the security and fundamental rights of Haitian women and girls are fully guaranteed. She recalled that gender equity and the empowerment of women and girls are essential political and economic imperatives for the sustainable development of the country.

Suzan also expressed her gratitude to the European Union and the United Nations agencies involved in the Spotlight Initiative for their unwavering support in achieving gender equality and building a society free of violence. During the ceremony, UN Women handed over a batch of rolling, IT and logistical equipment to the PNH, intended to strengthen the capacities of the Coordination of Women’s Affairs and Gender Issues, the ULCS and the BPM.

This donation, according to the ministry, is part of the strengthening of the capacities of the PNH for the prevention and response to gender-based violence, thus demonstrating a concrete commitment to the protection of women and girls in Haiti.
