The American airline Spirit Airlines resumed its flights to Cap-Haïtien this Friday, May 10, 2024. The first flights connect the country’s second city and Fort-Lauderdale, in the United States. In the process, the National Airport Authority (AAN) announced discussions with airlines for the resumption of flights to Port-au-Prince.

While other airlines usually operating between the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince and various cities in the United States are still delaying their flights due to the violence perpetrated by criminal gangs, the National Airport Authority (AAN) released a press release on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, reporting discussions between the country’s strategic airport infrastructure management entity and airlines on the actions necessary for the resumption of flights at Toussaint Louverture International Airport and the ‘Guy Malary Terminal.

The institution specifies that measures have been taken to improve security around and inside airports, in close collaboration with the Armed Forces of Haiti (FAd’H), the National Police of Haiti (PNH) and other relevant institutions. The AAN press release underlines that significant resources have been mobilized to achieve this objective.

“Inside the buildings, strict security measures have been implemented, with clear protocols to respond to threats while minimizing disruption to airport operations,” the AAN said.

The General Directorate of the National Airport Authority (AAN), through the press release, said it reaffirms its unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety of its facilities and employees, while guaranteeing the continuity of airport operations.

Recall that airlines suspended their flights to Haiti following an attack by the coalition of armed gangs called “viv ansanm” against Toussaint Louverture International Airport.

“On Thursday April 29, 2024, two aircraft were hit by projectiles following the bandits’ assault on police infrastructure in the metropolitan region of Port-au-Prince. These attacks caused damage to several of our buildings, leading to the slowdown of several essential services, including the suspension of flight operations by airlines,” recalled the AAN.

For its part, American Airlines is once again delaying the resumption of its flights to Port-au-Prince, according to a statement from Laura Masvidal, spokesperson for the airline. Miami Herald reported that previously announced for the beginning of this week, the new date for the resumption of American Airlines flights to Port-au-Prince is May 16.
