Parts of Haiti – including an area outside the US Embassy – are now plunged into darkness following vandal attacks on a power plant and four electrical substations in Port-au-Prince, the country’s national electricity company said.

Electricité D’Haïti (EDH), a bankrupt state company, declared in a statement on of the latest acts of vandalism perpetrated in recent weeks.”

“These acts of theft and sabotage only worsen the financial and technical situation of the company,” adds the press release, noting that four electrical substations and the Varreux power plant in Port-au-Prince have been “ destroyed and rendered completely dysfunctional,” cutting power to dozens of areas, including “the entrance to the United States Embassy” and a local hospital.

“Important documents, electrical installations, cables, inverters, batteries as well as computers and office equipment were taken away by these thugs,” the EDH also indicated.

Authorities are working to restore electricity to affected areas.
