The government extended the state of emergency throughout the West department for one month, from May 9 to June 8, 2024, according to a decree dated May 20. In addition, a curfew is in place throughout this region from May 22 to 28, 2024.
According to a government press release signed by the Prime Minister, Michel Patrick Boisvert, during the period of the State of Emergency, all demonstrations on public roads are prohibited, day or night, in the West department. . All offenders will see the police use all legal means at their disposal to enforce the curfew, until arrest.
However, the press release emphasizes that the government measure does not apply to law enforcement officers on duty, firefighters, ambulance drivers, health personnel and duly identified journalists.
Remember that the government had issued an Order on April 3, 2024 establishing a state of emergency throughout the West department for a period of one month from Thursday April 4 (4) to Friday 3 (3). ) May 2024. This measure was adopted with the aim of regaining control of the situation in the West department, plagued by an increase in armed gang violence.
