The OAS Permanent Council will hold a regular meeting on Wednesday, June 5 at OAS headquarters in Washington, DC, to examine “the situation in Haiti” and continue preparations for the 54th General Assembly scheduled for the end of June 2024, according to a press release from the organization.

The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) will hold a regular meeting on Wednesday, June 5, at 10:00 a.m. EDT (2:00 p.m. GMT) in the Simon Bolivar Room at OAS headquarters in Washington, DC, to consider “the situation in Haiti » and continues preparations for the fifty-fourth regular session of the General Assembly to be held in Asunción Paraguay from June 26 to 28, among other topics, informed the hemispheric organization in a press release dated June 3, 2024.

“The Chairman of the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States, Ambassador Chet Neymour, Permanent Representative of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, presents his compliments to all delegations and is pleased to invite them to a regular meeting of the Permanent Council at 10 a.m. . ”, we read in the letter of invitation from the President of the Permanent Council of the OAS.

The Special Representative of the Secretary General of the OAS in Haiti, Cristobal Dupouy participated in this ordinary meeting alongside the head of cooperation in Haiti of Global Affairs Canada, Tina Guthrie, the Assistant Secretary General for Europe, the Central Asia and the Americas of the United Nations, Miroslav Jenca and the Maltese Michael Frendo, member of the European Commission for Democracy through Law (Venice Commission).

On the agenda, an update on the situation in Haiti where the permanent mission of Haiti to the Organization of American States will be presented and the draft resolution “Support for the democratic transition in Haiti” will be examined. Furthermore, the resolution “Following up the situation in Nicaragua” will be examined. A review of the recommendation of the Commission on the Management of Inter-American Summits and the Participation of Civil Society in OAS Activities regarding requests for referral from civil society organizations to participate in the activities of the Organization will be made.
The hemispheric organization will also discuss the commemoration of the Inter-American Day against the Illicit Manufacturing and Trafficking of Firearms, proclaimed by resolution AG/RES. 2925 (XLVIII-O/18) (CP/INF.10151/24).

Other points will also be discussed during this ordinary meeting.
Note that this OAS meeting on the situation in Haiti, among others, will take place in a context marked by the choice of the Prime Minister of the transition, Garry Conille, by the Transitional Presidential Council. Less than 24 hours after his entry into the country, the PM of the transition visited the city center of the Haitian capital prey to insecurity established by armed gangs who attack state installations including hospitals, libraries and others.

Garry Conille, already in the Haitian Prime Minister under the presidency of Michel Joseph Martelly, received from the hands of the current president of the CPT, Edgar Leblanc Fils, the amplification of the decree appointing him as Prime Minister to lead the Monday transition government , accompanying his installation at the Prime Minister’s Office. However, information already suggests that there would be disagreements between the PM and the CPT regarding the number of ministerial portfolios during the transition.

Could this be the start of a new crisis? We just have to wait since it would be a question of announcing the formation of the ministerial cabinet shortly.
