Two escapees from the civil prison of Port-au-Prince captured by the South-East police

The Police South East has managed to apprehend two prison escapees as part of its enhanced security interventions. On Friday May 31, 2024, law enforcement arrested Josué Sylvestre, 31, during an intervention in Belle-Anse. Questioned by SDPJ/South-East agents, Sylvestre admitted to having escaped from the National Penitentiary on the night of March 2 after an attack against the army.

At the same time, Jean Simon Lionel, 46 years old, was captured on Wednesday June 5, 2024 in the 9th municipal section of Bainet. Incarcerated since 2010, Lionel also admitted to having escaped from the Civil Prison of Port-au-Prince on March 2.

The South-East Police Department has intensified its security measures to apprehend all the fugitives.

It should be recalled that during the night of Saturday March 2, 2024, gangs attacked the national penitentiary in downtown Port-au-Prince, allowing the escape of approximately 3,000 inmates. A similar action also took place at the Croix-des-Bouquets civil prison, where more than 1,500 inmates escaped.

In a press release published at the beginning of May on its Facebook page, the Haitian National Police announced that it had issued wanted notices following the period of crisis during which armed gangs destroyed the national penitentiary and the prison. civil service of Croix-des-Bouquets, allowing the escape of all the detainees.
