The decree creating the Presidential Transitional Council has just been published in the official newspaper Le Moniteur, this Friday, April 12, 2024.

After stakeholders of the Presidential Transitional Council submitted a political agreement to the incumbent government, the council of ministers issued the decree formalizing the existence of the nine-member Council for a 22-month mandate.

The Council’s first task will be, according to the political agreement submitted to CARICOM and the Council of Ministers, to choose a Prime Minister with whom a government will be set up to restore order in the country with a view to elections to renew the political staff. in Haiti.

Following the publication of the decree, the Caribbean Community (Caricom) welcomed, in a press release, “a new beginning” for Haiti, undermined by gang violence and poverty. Caricom countries “welcome today’s publication of the decree establishing the Presidential Transitional Council in Haiti.”

“The establishment of this nine-member council, broadly representative and politically inclusive, raises the possibility of a new beginning for Haiti,” reads the press release released by the group based in Georgetown, capital of Guyana.

For its part, the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH) declared on Transition.

“We reaffirm our commitment to supporting the country’s institutions in their efforts to restore democratic institutions,” declares the Representative of the UN Secretary General in Haiti, Mari Isabel Salvador.

“International support for the Haitian National Police remains essential to restore security and the rule of law,” concludes Ms. Salvador.
