Vietnam’s second presidential resignation in two years: What’s happening in the country amid its anti-corruption agenda

Vietnamese President Vo Van Thuong tendered his resignation this week, marking the latest episode in the Communist Party’s anti-corruption campaign in the country, leaving current Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan as interim president.

The appointment of Xuan, who had already held the post temporarily when Thuong’s predecessor resigned in early 2023, once again upends the country’s top leadership positions, raising doubts about Vietnam’s political stability after years of economic growth and an important role in global supply chains.

Vietnam relies heavily on exports and foreign investment, but its leaders have strengthened the party’s control of power and cracked down on dissent, as well as widespread corruption.

Analysts point out that leadership changes linked to the anti-corruption campaign also stem from rivalries within the ruling party’s own.
