Although there are generally two types of diabetes, in reality there are many more. But which is the most common in France? We will explain everything to you.

Diabetes, what is it?

Diabetes is a chronic condition characterized by high blood sugar levels, also known as hyperglycemia. The diagnosis is confirmed when fasting sugar level is equal to or exceeds 1.26 g/l or 7 mmol/l during two successive tests.

It exists two types of diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes results from the lack of insulin secretion by the pancreas, while type 2 diabetes is caused by improper use of insulin by the body’s cells.

The latter can develop gradually, without worrying symptoms.

Type 1 or type 2 diabetes: which is more common in France?

There are mainly two forms of diabetes: type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes.

The first occurs mainly in children or young adults and concerns 6% of people with diabetess according to Public Health France.

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form and affects around 90% of diabetics. It is a form that occurs in adults but can appear as early as adolescence.

THE The remaining 4% concerns other forms of diabetes such as gestational diabetes which occurs during pregnancy and disappears after childbirth. There are also forms of diabetes that result from specific or genetic conditions.

In any case, it is important to follow treatment. Without it, the disease can cause serious complications affecting the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys and also the nerves.

Diabetes: what treatments?

There is no “one size fits all” treatment for diabetes.

Thus, whether type 1 or type 2, the treatment of the disease is based on a balanced diet, regular physical activity and medical treatments. These can be oral or injectable medications, particularly when it comes to insulin.

The treatment is adapted according to the patient and the progression of their disease. The doctor takes a set of measures to compose antidiabetic treatment.
