22 avril 1868 : Act of the Trou du Nord: The officers, non-commissioned officers and soldiers of Sylvain Salnave’s army signed a petition at the Trou du Nord by which they requested the suspension of the Constitution of 1867 and that the exercise of authority be entrusted exclusively to their leader through the presidency for life.
22 avril 1906 : Death of Oswald Durand. – The Haitian poet Oswald Durand dies in Port-au-Prince at the age of 66. He is the author of the poem “Choucoune” whose verses are the words of a famous song in Haiti. All of Oswald Durand’s poems have been published in a two-volume collection, under the title Rires et Pleurs. They constitute the whole of his work.
22 avril 1922 : Birth of Jacques Stéphen Alexis.- Birth, in the city of Gonaïves (Haiti), of the Haitian writer Jacques Stéphen Alexis, author of very famous novels published by Gallimard editions including: Compère Général Soleil (1955), Musician Trees (1955). 1957), L’espace d’un cilement (1959) and a collection of stories, Romancero aux étoiles (1960).
22 avril 1971 : Jean-Claude Duvalier is enthroned president for life of the Republic before he turns 20. He thus succeeded his father, who apparently died the day before. Jean-Claude Duvalier was president of Haiti from 1971 until the morning of February 7, 1986.
22 avril 1994: Massacre in Raboteau: Members of the army and paramilitary bands of the Armed Revolutionary Front for Haitian Progress (FRAPH) trap the population of the shantytown during the night. Armed militias and soldiers in uniform shoot in the streets, furiously break down the doors of houses, torture, while residents flee towards the sea. This is where other soldiers and members of the FRAPH, lying in wait in boats, shoot at the crowd.
