Cultural centers in the sights of armed gangs

The historic cultural center ARAKA was set on fire by armed individuals, an inestimable loss for its members

Public buildings, depots and businesses of all kinds without forgetting private residences, the gang war is putting all sectors of the nation to the test. The cultural sector which until then had been spared has just been hit hard by the fire at the Araka cultural center.

Located on rue de l’Enterrement, this home bringing together a library and a relaxation space has become the epicenter of literary activities in this district.

Founded in 1988, the Center is one of the first cultural spaces in Haiti which emerged after the Duvalier dictatorship, and has always fulfilled its mission of allowing young people to open up to art and the world.

He certainly saw a whole generation of writers, artists and cultural editors blossom under the sun of downtown Port-au-Prince. During its various activities to mark its anniversary, the reading club has received, over the years, distinguished guests of honor including Frankétienne.
