The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) officially submitted on March 28 the list of members of the Presidential Council to Ariel Henry in a correspondence, a copy of which was sent to the editorial staff of Gazette Haiti. The resigning Prime Minister is asked to take “the necessary procedural arrangements to facilitate the immediate installation of the Presidential Transitional Council leading to the appointment of an interim Prime Minister”.

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has taken a crucial step in the political transition process in Haiti by officially submitting the list of members of the Presidential Council to resigning Prime Minister Ariel Henry. This approach follows, according to Caricom, a commitment made during the historic meeting of March 11, 2024 in Jamaica, where CARICOM heads of government, Haitian actors and international partners worked to thaw the crisis.

In this letter addressed to Ariel Henry and of which the newspaper has a copy, the President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana and Chairman of the CARICOM Heads of Government Conference, Mohamed Irfaan Ali, stressed the importance of quickly implementing the Presidential Transitional Council. This Council, according to the correspondence, is intended to ensure a smooth transition of power in Haiti, thereby ensuring continuity of governance and laying the foundation for free and fair elections in the near future.

Mohamed Irfaan Ali’s letter urges Ariel Henry to take the necessary measures to facilitate the installation of the Transitional Presidential Council, leading to the appointment of an interim Prime Minister.

According to Caricom, This step is considered crucial to allow the Presidential Council to begin functioning and to accelerate the deployment of the Multinational Security Mission in Haiti. “The MSS intends to support the Haitian people for the return of the country to a situation of security and stability for the holding of free and fair elections which will pave the way for the long-term recovery, growth and development of ‘Haiti,’ writes the Caricom official in this correspondence.

Furthermore, CARICOM undertakes to closely monitor the process and to recontact Ariel Henry once the name of the interim Prime Minister has been decided.

A Council of Ministers meeting is planned this evening with a view to issuing two decrees. One naming the members of the Presidential Council and another relating to its mode of operation, according to a government source.
