European ballot: the far right surpasses the Macronists

The National Rally (RN) achieved a historic score during the European elections, obtaining between 31.5 and 32.4% of the votes according to the Ipsos and Ifop institutes. This result, the best ever achieved by the party in a national election (excluding the second round), considerably strengthens the position of nationalists and sovereignists in the European Parliament. This election marks a significant turning point within the Twenty-Seven, illustrating a rise in power of populist movements across Europe.

The Macronist list led by Valérie Hayer, an outgoing MEP relatively unknown to the general public, suffered a scathing setback with only 15.2% of the votes. This result places it far behind the RN, highlighting the growing difficulties for President Emmanuel Macron as the end of his five-year term approaches. The Élysée announced a speech by the president in the evening, indicating a rapid response to this worrying electoral result for the centrist camp.

Second place remains uncertain, with Raphaël Glucksmann (PS-Place publique) approaching between 14 and 14.3% of the votes, more than double his score in 2019. This notable progression places the Socialist Party in an unexpected position of strength and could reshape the French political landscape at the dawn of new electoral deadlines. The competition for second place adds an additional dimension to these European elections marked by an upheaval of traditional political balances.
