Interior Minister Kithure Kindiki has reacted to the kidnappings linked to the protests against the Finance Bill.
In a statement issued on July 9, Mr. Kindiki expressed concern over the abductions and enforced disappearances allegedly carried out by security personnel.
He stressed the importance of legal provisions for protection against unlawful arrest for the safety of Kenyan citizens.
“The government has noted with concern the allegations of abductions and enforced disappearances involving security personnel,” Mr Kindiki said.
“All persons present in Kenyan territory are protected against unlawful or arbitrary arrest, abduction, enforced disappearance or any other unlawful method of detention of suspects for questioning, prosecution or for any other reason.
Furthermore, Mr. Kindiki affirmed that the law guarantees the protection of all rights and does not tolerate any violation, whether perpetrated by security personnel, public or private entities.
“The government reaffirms its commitment to respect and ensure the protection of all rights guaranteed by the Constitution and will not tolerate any violation, whether committed by security personnel or by public or private entities,” he added.
Further, Mr Kindiki said that independent constitutional agencies and statutory agencies will investigate all those involved in the kidnappings and bring them to justice.
He also stressed that law enforcement officers suspected of involvement in illegal arrests will also be held accountable.
“Independent constitutional and statutory agencies will investigate and prosecute any person or official involved in the violation of the Constitution by arresting any person outside the legal framework,” the statement concluded.
