In its annual report on forecasts for the world economy, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) forecasts negative growth of -3.0% for Haiti for the year 2024, this forecast launches Haiti towards a prospect of a sixth consecutive year of negative growth.

Port-au-Prince April 17, 2024: The IMF report, published on Tuesday April 16, 2024, is titled: “Stable but slow, resilience in divergence”. The International Monetary Fund has announced its growth projections for the global economy in 2024, which is expected to grow by 3.2%, the same as in 2023.

According to the data, expected growth in 2024 for Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) stands at 2.0%. However, only two countries in the region are on the way to negative economic performances: Argentina which is expected to fall by -2.8% and that of Haiti could be around -3.0%. With this performance, the Haitian economy will be the least performing in the LAC region for the year 2024.

Underlined that, in the event of confirmation of these established projections, Haiti will experience its sixth consecutive year of economic decline after poor performance: -1.7% in 2019, -3.3% in 2020, -1.8% in 2021, -1.7% in 2022 and -1.9% in 2023.

In a context where the phenomenon of insecurity is in full swing in the metropolitan region of Port-au-Prince, what possible alternative to save Haiti from this predicted economic catastrophe?
