P-au-P, July 11, 2024 [AlterPresse] — The Conference of Rectors and Presidents of Haitian Universities and Higher Education Institutions (Corpuha) urges the public authorities and the Ministry of National Education and Vocational Training (Menfp) to take seriously the attacks, which are increasing against public and private universities in Haiti, in a note seen by the online agency AlterPresse.

La Corpuha condemns the attack perpetrated, for several months, against the headquarters of the Goc University in Source Matelas, in the commune of Cabaret (north of Port-au-Prince) and that against the Quiskeya Americas University Institute (Inuka) in Tabarre (northeast of the capital), not far from the embassy of the United States of America, on Sunday, July 7, 2024.

These “deleterious” attacks against Goc and Inuka universities come after those orchestrated since March 2024 against the State University of Haiti (Ueh) by armed bandits, vandalizing the premises of the École Normale Supérieure (ENS), the École Nationale des Arts (ENARTS)faculties of agronomy and veterinary medicine (Famv) et Sciences as well as the National Library of Haiti (Bnh), in the metropolitan area of the capital, Port-au-Prince.

“This is a clear signal that they want to destroy an important sector of life
national, which is higher education. Destroy higher education
“To strike a balance between public and private is to attack the foundation of the nation. Without higher education, the future of Haitian society is mortgaged,” reads the note signed by Corpuha board members Jean-Robert Charles (president), Franck Charles (treasurer) and Joham Vixamar (member).

Attacking higher education centers in the metropolitan area of the capital, Port-au-Prince, which represents 80% of the student body and more than 60% of university centers, consists of reducing Haitian society to its simplest expression, by removing all means of producing competent human resources for its social, economic and political development, considers Corpuha.

It calls on officials at the highest level of the State to assume their responsibilities to restore order and security in the country, thus ensuring respect for private property.

She calls for urgent action by the public authorities to curb this deadly trend and for sovereign aid from the State to save the higher education sector from extinction due to the mass departure of professors and students, due to the phenomenon of widespread crime.

Indeed, several thousand professionals have left Haiti, through the Biden program for migrants, announced since the beginning of January 2023 by the President of the United States of America, Joseph Robinette Biden known as Joe Biden, while others have traveled to Chile, Nicaragua and Brazil, in search of better living.
