P-au-P., April 23, 2024 [AlterPresse] — Next Thursday, April 25 is the date chosen for the installation of the Presidential Transitional Council, appointed on April 16, a source from this body confirmed for AlterPresse.

The ceremony will take place at the Welcome Villa, located in the heights of Bourdon/Musseau (eastern sector), at 10:00 AM, according to the details provided.

This former private residence which became state property served, among other things, as the office of the prime ministers or prime minister, a second place of reference for the executive power.

The announcement of the date of the inauguration of the Presidential Transitional Council was eagerly awaited. But uncertainty prevailed, because of the security situation which continued to deteriorate.

The coordinated and intense action of the gangs, which occupy around 90% of the capital, pushed to abandon the idea of organizing the installation ceremony at the national palace (site of the ruins of the presidential palace) at the Champ de Mars, main public square in the center of the capital.

As for several days, heavy shooting continued around the Champ de Mars, without the police managing to push the bandits out of the perimeter.

This situation illustrates the immensity of the security challenge that the Council must face from April 25. Violence is still daily. Gangs maintain unbearable pressure against the population of many neighborhoods and paralyze both public administration and entire sectors of the economy.

The deployment of a Multinational Security Support Mission (Mmas) has been authorized by the United Nations Security Council since Monday October 2, 2023, following a robust request for assistance, made on Friday October 7, 2022 , by the de facto government of Ariel Henry in favor of the Haitian National Police (Pnh), in the fight against armed gangs.

From January to March 2024, around 2,500 people were killed or injured due to armed gang violence, an increase of 53% compared to the October to December 2023 quarter, according to a report by the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (Binuh), published on Friday April 19, 2024.
