Bainet (South-East of Haiti), May 31, 2024 [AlterPresse] — Former national policeman and prison escapee Clifton Hyppolite, suspected in the assassination, on Wednesday July 7, 2021, of Jovenel Moïsewas apprehended, on Thursday, May 30, 2024, in the commune of Bainet, by the South-East police, informs the police institution, in a note of which the online agency AlterPresse took note.

Clifton Hyppolite was arrested for murder, attempted murder and escaping from prison.

Imprisoned in the National Penitentiary (civil prison of Port-au-Prince), for his alleged involvement in the assassination of Jovenel Moïse, this national police officer is among several thousand detainees, who have escaped from this prison since Saturday March 2, 2024

Many of these escapees would have taken refuge in the stronghold of the Village de Dieu gang, commanded by Johnson André alias That.

The police institution then issued more than a hundred wanted notices against these prisoners on the run.

In the meantime, as part of the assassination case of the former president, around fifty people, including the former director general of police Léon Charles (November 16, 2020 – October 21, 2021; March 2004 – July 2005) , were referred to the criminal courtaccording to the order dated January 25, 2024 of investigating judge Walther Wesser Voltaire, made public on February 19, 2024.

Leon Charles was forced to resign on Wednesday February 21, 2024as permanent representative of the Republic of Haiti to the Organization of American States (Oea).

In a letter addressed to the de facto holder of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Religious Affairs (Maec), Jean Victor Généus, Léon Charles justified his resignation by being accused “in an absolutely unfair and slanderous manner” in the order, dated of January 25, 2024, of investigating judge Walter Wesser Voltaire, responsible for investigating the assassination of Jovenel Moïse.
