Hurricane Beryl headed towards Jamaica on Wednesday, with forecasters warning of potentially deadly winds after at least seven people were killed.

Beryl has already left a trail of death, with at least three people killed in Grenada, where the storm made landfall on Monday, as well as one in St. Vincent and the Grenadines and three in Venezuela, authorities said.

Grenada Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell said the island of Carriacou, which was hit by the eye of the storm, was virtually isolated, with homes, telecommunications and fuel facilities flattened.

The 35-square-kilometre island is home to about 9,000 people. At least two people have died there, Mitchell said, and a third was killed on the country’s main island, Grenada, when a tree fell on a house.

In St. Vincent and the Grenadines, one person was killed by the storm on the island of Bequia, and a man died in the northeastern coastal state of Sucre after being swept away by a swollen river, local authorities said.

As of Tuesday, July 2, 2024, Beryl was packing sustained winds of 235 kilometers per hour as it headed toward Jamaica and the Cayman Islands, according to the NHCA hurricane watch and tropical storm warnings have also been issued for parts of Haiti.
