Welcome to the Kenyan police officers in the land of Martelly, BBQ, Conille, Vitelhomme, Leblanc, where agreements between cronies hover above the Constitution and the laws of the Republic while the Capital is suffocated under the rubbish…

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) said the officer demanded that the suspect hand over KSh40,000 or else he would be charged with other offenses in court. The complainant reported the matter to the EACC, which arrested the officer, but he was released on bail pending the outcome of the investigation.

In Nairobi, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Wednesday, June 5, arrested a police officer attached to the Parliament Police Station for corruption.

Corporal John Mwai Mbili was arrested after he tried to ask a suspect in police custody for a bribe to help him with his case. According to the EACC, the officer asked the suspect to hand over KSh40,000 or else he would be charged with other offenses in court. The complainant reported the matter to the EACC, who arrested the officer, but he was released on bail pending the outcome of the investigation.

Why did the EACC arrest John Mwai Mbili?

The officer, identified as Corporal John Mwai Mbili, will face corruption charges for attempting to solicit a bribe of KSh40,000 from a suspect.

“Corporal John Mwai Mbili, a police officer attached to the Parliament Police Station, is facing corruption charges for attempting to extort KSh40,000 from a suspect with an ongoing case at the station,” the EACC said .

According to the EACC, the police officer asked the suspect to hand over the bribe to help him close the case and even threatened to add new offenses against him in court.

“Corporal Mbili told the complainant that he had to pay him ‘something small’ to facilitate the closure of the case. He demanded a bribe of KSh40,000 from the complainant, threatening that if the complainant did not pay, he would charge him with further offenses in court,” the EACC added.

Following his arrest, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Renson Igonga approved his prosecution and ordered the release of the complainant and the resolution of the matter in court.

The EACC said the complainant reported the matter to the anti-corruption agency, which conducted an investigation before arresting Mbili. However, Mbili has been released on bail while investigations continue.

“The suspect has since been released on bail pending the conclusion of remaining aspects of the investigation,” the EACC said.

DCI Officer Arrested in Nyandarua for KSh10,000 Bribe

Shortly before, still under the same charge of soliciting bribes, an officer of the Criminal Investigation Department (DCI) was arrested after allegedly demanding a bribe of KSh10,000.

The agent made the request by promising to help a victim facing a fraud case before being arrested by the EACC. The incident took place in Nyandarua County.
