Despite a decision by the high court of justice in Kenya, obstructing a possible deployment of police officers in Haiti, Kenyan President William Ruto, during his participation in the Italy-Africa summit in Rome, reiterated his desire to continue his mission of peace in Haiti, despite the blockage of justice in his country.

Indeed, a Kenyan court had ruled unconstitutional the deployment of officers abroad without a “reciprocal arrangement” with the host government. In response, President Ruto indicated that Haiti had requested assistance several months ago, and he expected a formal request to be made soon, thus meeting the court’s demands. Haiti has already made the written and formal request several months ago, according to the Kenyan president. “Thus, the mission can move forward from next week, if all the paperwork is settled between Kenya and Haiti on the bilateral path suggested by the court,” reassures Ruto.

Last week, the United Nations reported documenting 4,789 people killed by gang violence in Haiti last year, a 119% increase from 2022, with another 3,000 people kidnapped. The situation in Haiti highlights the urgency of the international mission proposed to address this humanitarian crisis.
