Kenya is continuing with its plan to lead the multinational force in Haiti despite the High Court ruling, President Wiliam Ruto tells Reuters.

While participating in an Italy-Africa summit in Rome, Kenyan President Wiliam Ruto told Reuters that his country is continuing with its plan to lead the peace mission in Haiti despite the Kenyan High Court’s decision to ban the deployment of police officers in Haiti, a country ravaged by gang violence for several years.

Indeed, the president of Kenya told Reuters that Haiti had requested aid months ago and that he hoped a request would arrive soon to satisfy the court’s demands. “This mission can therefore take place as early as next week, if all the documents are completed between Kenya and Haiti on the bilateral route suggested by the court,” he said.

Asked whether there had been ongoing discussions with Haiti to obtain the necessary request, William Ruto replied: “Absolutely. Haiti actually wrote officially, not today, but several months ago.”

Kenyan High Court judge Chacha Mwita delivered his judgment on Friday January 26 regarding the multinational force. The court had declared that the manner used for the proposed deployment was unconstitutional and null and void.

A few hours later, Isaac Mwaura, spokesperson for the Kenyan government, said that those in power had taken note and would appeal. “Although the government respects the rule of law, we have nevertheless decided to immediately challenge the High Court verdict,” he said in the statement.
