Lumbago can trigger sharp, disabling pain. To avoid being stuck for too long, there are simple tips to quickly calm the pain. Here’s how to do it.

What is lumbago?

And lumbago, also called low back pain, results from contracture of the muscles of the lower back. This is linked to an everyday life situation. Thus, lumbago can result:

  • With a wrong movement;
  • From too sudden an effort;
  • From carrying too heavy a load;
  • Repetition of trauma to the lumbar region;
  • A sporting activity practiced without warming up.

Certain risk factors such as a sedentary lifestyle or being overweight promote the occurrence of lumbago. The latter is characterized by the sudden onset of pain in the lower back.

Some patients describe a cracking sensation in the back at the time of the trauma. The pain is debilitating, it pushes the person to adopt a posture which provides relief or even to lie down. The symptoms are annoying but can be relieved at home fairly quickly.

Heat and stretching to relieve lumbago pain

The pain from lumbago can be very severe and debilitating. This is why it is important to know some tips to calm the pain quickly. Therefore, experts advise:

  • Get into a lying position on your back. Don’t hesitate to elevate your legs on a seat. Generally, it is best to lie down on a hard surface;
  • Get into a lying position on your stomach. Conversely, lying on your stomach and exercising every two hours can be beneficial. Once on your stomach, raise your upper body using your elbows. Hold this position for a minute;
  • Finally, heat can soothe pain. Help yourself with patches, hot water bottles or heated lumbar belts placed on your lower back.

If the pain persists or prevents you from carrying out your daily activities, do not hesitate to make an appointment with a healthcare professional.
