The Argentina national team’s ambition to reach another final came true on Tuesday night thanks to two converted goal chances.
The Albiceleste, who faced Canada in the semi-finals of the Copa América at Metlife Stadium in New Jersey, had already met this opponent on the first day of Group A, whom they beat 2-0 thanks to goals from Lautaro Martínez and Julián Álvarez.
After a good start from Canada, Argentina began to take control of the match and opened the scoring in the 22nd minute: an assist from Rodrigo De Paul to Julián Álvarez, who scored between the goalkeeper’s legs to give the Albiceleste 1-0.
After the opening goal, the team began to dominate the game and had several chances to extend the lead. Di María almost scored thanks to a trick by the opposing defense, then Messi had two very close chances, but failed to make it 2-0. Argentina went into the locker room with a one-goal lead.
Fortunately, the goal that had eluded them during the first 45 minutes arrived quickly in the second half: in the 51st minute, Enzo Fernández finished off a great move by the national team and his shot found Messi, who deflected it to make it 2-0.
