A new contingent of 200 Kenyan police officers arrived in Haiti on Tuesday, July 16, to join the Multinational Mission for Security Support (MMAS). This mission, aimed at combating gangs that terrorize the population, also includes forces from Bangladesh, Benin, Chad, the Bahamas and Barbados.

“We have 200 police officers who left last night, they should land at their destination Haiti this morning,” said a senior Kenyan police officer. This information was confirmed by Agence France-Presse (AFP), stressing Kenya’s commitment to this international operation.

Kenya has pledged a total of 1,000 police officers to contribute to the 2,500-strong multinational force, which is expected to last for an initial one-year period. The first contingent of Kenyan police officers arrived in Haiti in late June, marking the start of the joint effort to restore security in the country.

The Kenyan contingent is made up of several elite units, including the Recce Squad, known for its anti-terrorist interventions in Kenya. Their experience is crucial in the face of the violence of Haitian gangs that control 80% of the capital, Port-au-Prince. These specialized police officers are thus deployed to provide their expertise and try to restore order in a country in the grip of a serious security crisis.
