Kenya is sending a first contingent of 400 elite officers to Haiti for a stabilization mission.

On Monday, June 24, 2024, Kenyan President William Ruto officially presented the Kenyan flag to the first 400 officers en route to Haiti, marking the start of the multinational force’s deployment to the country. Made up of elite officers from the Kenyan Police Rapid Deployment Unit, this first contingent underwent rigorous training, ensuring they were optimally prepared for the mission.

In a message posted on X, President Ruto highlighted Kenya’s commitment to global peacemaking and conflict resolution. “Kenya has strong credentials in peacemaking and conflict resolution globally. The presence of our police officers in Haiti will bring relief to the men, women and children whose lives have been shattered by gang violence. We will work with the international community to bring lasting stability to Haiti,” he wrote.

The Kenyan president also highlighted the crucial role that Kenyan police officers will play in providing relief to victims of gang violence in Haiti during a briefing at the Embakasi Administrative Police Training College, ahead of the deployment of the first contingent of the Kenyan police to the Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti.

According to a senior official cited by theAFPthe Kenyan troops will be led by Deputy Inspector General Noor Gabow, Chief of Operations Samuel Chebet (GSU), and Principal Deputy Inspector General Geoffrey Otunge.
