As a prelude to the International Day of Family Remittances, usually celebrated on June 16, the Embassy of Haiti near the State of Qatar and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) organized a round table around the theme of remittances and migration. At this first session, on June 11, 2024 at the United Nations House in Qatar, of a series of planned discussions, around thirty Ambassadors, heads of mission, and representatives of the World Bank and the private sector took part. go.
“During these discussions, on the sidelines of the celebration of the International Remittances Day, the speakers discussed a set of objectives set by the organizing members. They are, firstly, the preponderant role played by the Diaspora in the development of its country of origin as well as the socio-economic and cultural enrichment that it brings to its host country.”, informs the Haitian government in a press release dated Friday June 14, 2024.
They also discussed the immense and still untapped potential of remittances as a development player in the global financial ecosystem, and the support that diplomatic and consular missions can provide to the objectives of optimizing remittances from the diaspora, as an innovative financing tool for development.
For the occasion, Ambassador François Guillaume II, moderator of the round table, accompanied by Vichy De La Fayette Thibeaud, Minister-Counsellor, expressed his satisfaction with the richness of the discussions and the recommendations made.
At the end and the round table, the Embassy of Haiti near the State of Qatar and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), warmly thanked Ms. Ewa Naqvi, Head of Mission of the IOM and her deputy Mr. Shabarinath Nair, for their collaboration in the organization of this important initiative.
Finally, the organizers also paid tribute to the Haitian diaspora, noting that “the diaspora contributes more than 20% of GDP in remittances to our economy”, adding that it also represents an inestimable and indomitable source of economic development. and social for the country.
