Mother and 4-year-old daughter die after shooting on Florida Turnpike in Broward County

A four-year-old girl and her mother were killed following a shooting late Friday night on the Florida Turnpike in Broward County.

Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) officers responded shortly after 11:50 p.m. Friday to the northbound lanes of the Turnpike, south of Hollywood Boulevard, where they found the two victims had been struck by gunfire.

Hollywood Fire Rescue personnel also responded to the scene.

“Unfortunately, the girl was pronounced deceased at the scene,” FHP Lt. Indiana Miranda said in a statement, adding that her mother also succumbed to her injuries later at the hospital.

According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, the victims are Janelle, aged 4, and her mother Beatrice Saintvil who is said to be of Haitian origin.

Florida Highway Patrol, Broward Sheriff’s deputies and Hollywood Police Department officers responded to the shooting, which closed the Florida Turnpike early Saturday morning. A tow truck removed a car riddled with bullet holes in the front and rear passenger side.

“At the request of our department, detectives from the Broward Sheriff’s Homicide Unit responded to the scene and are currently investigating this fatal shooting,” Miranda said.

FHP patrol officers and BSO detectives asked anyone with information about this case to contact Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.
