The US ambassador to the UN accuses members of the Security Council of blocking the imposition of sanctions against Youri Latortue.

According to the American newspaper, Miami Herald, the Biden administration’s top diplomat at the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, accused her colleagues on the Security Council of blocking US efforts to impose sanctions against former Haitian Senate President Youri Latortue, accused of financing armed gangs in Haiti.

Citing a report by a group of experts on Haiti, the American diplomat recalled that Youri Latortue exercises considerable control over the political and economic life of the Artibonite department, notably through violent gangs that he finances and arms. She made these statements after the 15 members of the Security Council voted unanimously to renew the mandate of the UN political office in Haiti (BINUH) for an additional year.

Also according to the Florida newspaper, the resolution, drafted by the United States and Ecuador, tasks the United Nations Integrated Office (BINUH) to oversee the success of the new political transition in Haiti as well as the Kenya-led Multinational Security Support Mission (MMSS).
