EU calls for formal appointment of presidential council by outgoing government

After the publication of the decree officially establishing the procedure for installing the presidential council, the European Union, through its spokesperson, Peter Stano, urges the outgoing government of Ariel Henry to formally appoint the members of the presidential council.

The spokesperson for the diplomatic service of the European Union, Peter Stanoin a statement made this Monday, April 15, on the establishment of a Presidential Transitional Council, indicated that “following the publication of the official decree establishing the procedure for establishing a Presidential Transitional Council (CPT) in Haiti, it is now crucial that the CPT be formally appointed by the outgoing government of Prime Minister Ariel Henry without further delay .”

According to him, the country urgently needs a Haitian solution to end the current political vacuum and address the long-standing political, security and humanitarian crisis. We call on all Haitian political forces to cooperate sincerely in achieving this objective.

Mr. Stano emphasizes that the appointment of the CPT is also necessary to pave the way for the deployment of the multinational security support mission, mandated by United Nations Security Council Resolution 2699, to support the efforts of the National Police. Haiti in its fight against gangs, restoring the rule of law and security in the country, to ultimately lead to democratic elections held in good conditions.

However, this decree, the publication of which is welcomed by the international community, is contested by representatives of political, economic, religious and civil society organizations signatories to the Agreement for a Peaceful and Orderly Transition.

Jacques Ted ST DIC, Saurel JACINTHE, Raina FORBIN, Liné BALTHAZAR, Lesly VOLTAIR, A. Rodon Bien-Aimé, Jean Lucien LIGONDÉ are said to be deeply shocked upon learning of the decree published on April 12, 2024 by the government and denounce the introduction major modifications which distort the consensual project of a two-headed executive supported by the Transitional Presidential Council.
