Haiti – Social: 45% of the population facing a situation of acute hunger
23/03/2024 11:03:58

Hunger has reached unprecedented levels in Haiti. 4.97 million people (45%) of the population are today facing a situation of acute hunger and struggling to feed themselves, according to the bulletin published Friday March 22 by the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs of the United Nations Secretariat,

IPC Acute Food Insecurity Overview (March – June 2024):

“Armed gang violence has increased in recent months, pushing many people to seek refuge in safer places, with an estimated 362,000 people now internally displaced.

Around 17,000 people have left Port-au-Prince for the departments, leaving behind their means of subsistence and finding themselves faced with even more vulnerable situations2. This increase in gang violence limits the movement of goods and contributes to rising prices of basic foodstuffs.

Compared to the previous projection made during the August 2023 analysis, the situation has deteriorated, with around 4.97 million people (50% of the analyzed population) facing high levels of acute food insecurity for the period March to June 2024. This includes approximately 1.64 million people (17% of the analyzed population) classified in IPC Phase 4 Integrated food security Phase Classification

IPC Phase 4 de l’IPC : (Humanitarian emergency)
Humanitarian emergency: Serious lack of access to food accompanied by excessive mortality, very high and increasing malnutrition and irreversible depletion of livelihood assets.

and an additional 3.32 million (33% of the population analyzed), classified in Phase 3 of the IPC

IPC Phase 3 : Acute food and livelihood crisis
Acute and critical lack of access to food accompanied by severe and unusual malnutrition and accelerated depletion of livelihood assets which, if the situation continues, will push the population into Phase 4 or 5 and/or will likely result in chronic poverty.

The current update shows a sharp deterioration in food security in Haiti, with 532,000 more people experiencing acute food insecurity than previous estimates for this season.

The main factors behind this deterioration are increased gang violence, rising prices, low agricultural production due to below-normal rainfall, and a lack of previously planned humanitarian aid. Despite the significant efforts of partners and the Government, between August and December 2023, only 5% of the population benefited from humanitarian food aid. In the coming months, the partners plan to reach 8% of the population, with significant efforts in Gonâve and Croix-des-Bouquets.

Eight areas are now classified in Phase 4. The Artibonite Valley (Artibonite HT04), La Grand’ Anse rural (Grand’ Anse HT07 and HT08), La Gonâve (West HT01, the transverse part of the West (West HT07 ) and the poor areas/very poor neighborhoods (P/TP) of Cité Soleil, Croix des Bouquets and Port au Prince. The rest of the country remains in Phase 3 as estimated in the previous IPC analysis.

The towns of Jérémie, Haut Plateau (Centre HT03), Artibonite HT04, Côte Sud (South HT08) and Tabarre P/TP have a high prevalence of food insecurity.
