In order to combat nudes, Meta will test a “nudity controller” filter

Awareness messages, protective measures, a helpline… Meta seems determined to take head-on the fight against sextortion, this blackmail with nude photos which affects many young people.

The digital giant announced this Thursday new measures which will be tested from May in a few Latin American countries before a global deployment in the coming months.

Among these new features, we find a “nudity controller” on Instagram, which will be set by default on minors’ accounts. It will automatically detect images with nudity received on the application’s messaging system and blur them.

“This way, the recipient is not unwantedly exposed to intimate content and has the choice to view this image or not”explains Capucine Tuffier, responsible for child protection at Meta France.

Awareness messages sent to the sender and receiver of the images, reminding them that this sensitive content can result in screenshots and transfers by malicious people. “It’s about reducing the creation and sharing of these types of images”summarizes Ms. Tuffier.

Furthermore, when an account has been identified by Meta’s artificial intelligence tools as potentially being the source of this type of blackmail, its interactions with minor users will be strongly limited.

An account of potential “evildoer” will therefore not be able to send private messages to a minor’s account, will not have access to its complete list of subscribers and minors’ accounts will no longer appear in its search bar, explains Capucine Tuffier.

Meta will also warn a young user if they have come into contact with a potential blackmailer. The minor will then be directed to a dedicated site « Stop Sextorsion » and will have access to a telephone crisis line in partnership with associations.

Meta had already announced in January a first round of measures to better protect young users, in particular the obligation for a minor user to obtain explicit permission from their parents to change their account from private to public, access more content said “sensitive” or have the ability to receive messages from people he does not already follow on the platform.
