The United States congratulates the creation of the Presidential Transitional Council in Haiti

Reactions are pouring in after the publication of the decree creating the Presidential Transitional Council by the government. On its website, the US Department of State informs that the United States welcomes the creation of the Presidential Transitional Council in Haiti.

“The result of months of discussions between various Haitian stakeholders, this Council helps pave the way for free and fair elections and the accelerated deployment of a multinational security support mission. We congratulate Haitians for their commitment to moving forward in a spirit of reconciliation and national dialogue” we read in the note.

Furthermore, the United States expresses its determination to work with Caricom and international partners to support the Council’s mission of working to improve the lives of all Haitians.

Furthermore, the note emphasizes that the security situation in Haiti remains untenable due to violence caused by gangs who claim to represent the Haitian people but thrive on violence and misery. “Gangs have closed key infrastructure and economic sites that are essential for fuel, humanitarian aid and other vital supplies, and continue to deprive Haitians of their rights to food, education and health care” specifies the note.

The United States says it continues to support Haitian security forces to strengthen their capabilities in their fight to defend their country while commending Haitian leaders for making difficult compromises to move toward democratic governance through free and fair elections.

Canada supports Council

Canada, for its part, says it welcomes the publication of the decree which creates the Presidential Transitional Council in Haiti. For the Canadian government, the national unity council is a step in the right direction to restore security, public order and democracy in Haiti.

Furthermore, Canada emphasizes that it will continue to collaborate with Haitian stakeholders, the Caribbean Community and international partners to support the next steps towards the organization of free and fair elections in Haiti, and to resolve the crisis of security, particularly through the Multinational Security Support Mission (MMSS).
