They are the dread of young parents. And for good reason, colic causes crying attacks that last and are difficult to calm down. The causes of these intestinal spasms that occur after breastfeeding or bottle feeding are not well known.

Fortunately, you can try to relieve your baby with simple actions. Follow our advice.

Keep him in an upright or sitting position after his meal

Give your baby time to digest after feeding or bottle feeding. Do not put him to bed immediately after his meal.

Burp him and keep him on you in a sitting position or carry him upright for a few minutes. This will prevent the contents of his stomach from flowing back into the esophagus.

Rock him and comfort him

If he cries, don’t hesitate to hold him, walk him or rock him. Walks, whether in a stroller or in a car, can be effective against colic.

Massage his stomach

You can soothe your baby by massaging his stomach. With vegetable oil, press lightly around his navel, with two fingers, in a circular motion (clockwise).

Gradually widen your massage circle until you reach your baby’s right hip.

These movements help in the evacuation of gases. This releases the air that he swallowed during the meal and which causes stomach aches.

Place him face down on your knees

Babies who have colic may feel less pain when lying on their stomach. You can take the opportunity to gently massage his stomach with your knees. Or massage his arms, legs or back while he is in this position. This will help him relax.

Make sure your baby swallows as little air as possible during meals

The air ingested during feeding and bottle feeding could be the cause of colic. To prevent your baby from swallowing too much air, make sure he takes the nipple in his mouth or hold his bottle at an angle.

If you feed him infant milk, talk to your doctor. He may advise you to try lactose-free milk, which is more digestible.
