A delegation made up of various Haitian civil society organizations and the Haitian-American diaspora is currently at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, to take part in the third session of the UN Permanent Forum on People of African ancestry.

It is under the theme “The Second International Decade for People of African Descent: Fight against systemic racism, restorative justice and sustainable development” that this meeting will take place from April 16 to 19, 2024.

In a press release sent to our editorial staff, the Haitian-American Foundation for Democracy (HAFFD) emphasizes that this forum constitutes a crucial platform for advancing the rights and well-being of people of African descent around the world. During this event, the delegation will participate in discussions alongside other Haitian delegates, advocating for meaningful change and recognizing Haiti’s historical significance.

Participating organizations, including Nou Pap Domi, Nègès Mawon, RNDDH, Université Itinerante de Résistance, MOJEJ, Bosal Mizik, AKS, AREDE, KremeKam, Haitian Bridge Alliance, Policité, Mouvement Akò Montana and the Haitian-American Foundation for Democracy ( HAFFD), represent a diversity of commitments to human rights, social justice and equality.

The press release also underlines that the delegation of Haitian civil society and the Haitian-American diaspora intends to highlight the crucial role of Haiti in world history when it courageously fought against slavery. Recognizing this historical context is essential to understanding Haiti’s unique position in the global struggle for justice and equality, the statement said.

Among the delegation’s objectives is the promotion of restitution and reparations for Haiti, in order to address the historical injustices inflicted on the country and to pave the way towards healing and empowerment.

Furthermore, the delegation insists on the need for a reset of Haiti’s relations with the international community, stressing that this could accelerate the socio-economic progress of the country and promote the promotion of human rights on its territory.

The twenty-member delegation will include HAFFD Board Member Michelle Austin Pamies and Senior Policy Advisor Jocelyn McCalla during these crucial discussions. Their participation exemplifies HAFFD’s commitment to promoting justice, equity and positive change for people of African descent.
