A National Guard officer shot a migrant while responding to a stabbing involving human smugglers in the El Paso area on Sunday, as violence in the region continues to escalate .
American troops deployed to the region to try to stem the steady flow of illegal crossings from Mexico into the United States were informed that one migrant had stabbed another on the banks of the Rio, according to an internal US Border Patrol memo. The area where the incident occurred is near Gate 36, a hotspot for illegal crossings and where hundreds of migrants stormed barbed wire and assaulted National Guard soldiers only a few weeks.
Two migrants were treated for non-life-threatening injuries after Sunday’s incident and were reportedly taken into Border Patrol custody, while the area was later secured by Department of Public Safety troops from Texas.
