President Biden is mobilizing his executive authority to support anti-crime efforts in Haiti with $10 million in aid.

In a recent memorandum from the White House, President Joe Biden announced his commitment to provide significant support to the fight against crime and drug trafficking in Haiti. This initiative will allow the Secretary of State to use a $10 million fund to acquire goods and services, as well as provide military training, to strengthen Haiti’s capacity to combat illicit activities.

The document, made public on the White House website, delegates authority under section 506(a)(2) of the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961, allowing the drawdown on stocks and resources of existing US agencies. The move reflects the Biden administration’s commitment to promoting international stability and supporting partners in difficulty.

Haiti has for years faced persistent problems with crime and drug trafficking, which have aggravated national difficulties and hampered the country’s development. This assistance is part of an ongoing partnership aimed at strengthening the rule of law and democratic institutions in Haiti.

Targeted funds will be used to provide specific anti-crime and anti-drug assistance, consistent with the framework established by the Foreign Assistance Act. Although the direct benefits of this aid remain to be seen, investment in the country’s defense capabilities could help create a more secure and stable environment, a prerequisite for positive social progress.

A senior State Department official, speaking on condition of anonymity, stressed that this effort illustrates the focused intent to dismantle the networks that fuel crime and destruction in Haiti.
