The REAL ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005 following a recommendation by the 9/11 Commission to strengthen security at airports and other federal facilities.

Does your Nevada, New Jersey, New York, or other state driver’s license or ID card have a gold shape like Nevada, NJ, NY… with a white star in the top corner? right ? If not, the one-year countdown is on to obtain a Real ID from the New Jersey, NY…Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles.

To meet federal requirements, people wishing to use their driver’s license to pass through airport security for domestic flights in the United States will need to have a Real ID. Secure federal installations, such as military bases, already require Real IDs for entry; they do not accept standard driving licenses.

For example, in Nevada, more than 1.8 million residents have already obtained a Real ID, meaning holders of a driver’s license or state-issued ID card in the Silver State 76% are in good standing, according to DMV data. This leaves just over 568,000 people in possession of a driving license or standard identity card.

People ages 18 and older who do not have a Real ID have until May 7, 2025, to obtain one from the DMV. The original deadline was set for 2020 and was pushed back to May 3, 2023 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The deadline was pushed back again to 2025 due to congestion at DMV offices following office closures during the pandemic.

Obtaining a Real ID requires an in-person visit to a DMV office, and those who still need to obtain one should make an appointment as soon as possible to ensure they have enough time to meet the deadline.

“My main recommendation is don’t wait until the last minute,” said Sean Sever, a DMV spokesman. “Get a Real ID as soon as possible so you don’t get stuck in an airport on May 7, 2025 or later.”

The DMV plans to offer the ability to obtain a Real ID online in the future as part of ongoing modernization efforts.

The REAL ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005 following a recommendation by the 9/11 Commission to strengthen security at airports and other federal facilities.

Security standards established by the Real ID Act include the addition of anti-counterfeiting technology, fraud protection, and the ability to use documentary evidence and records checks to verify a person’s identity .

Residents will need to provide the DMV with proof of identity (one document), proof of any name change (if the name has been changed), proof of social security number (one document), and proof of address residential in Nevada – paer example – (two documents).
