Haitian Prime Minister Garry Conille met with U.S. Representative Frederica Wilson on Saturday in a conference room at the Notre-Dame d’Haïti Catholic Church in Miami’s Little Haiti neighborhood.
Conille, a United Nations development specialist and former Haitian prime minister (2011-2012), left Port-au-Prince on Friday. He has assigned Carlos Hercules, Haiti’s justice minister, to serve as interim prime minister in his absence due to chronic instability.
Press conference
Conille and Wilson held a press conference after a meeting, closed to the public but including invited guests.
“We know full well that the only way to succeed in the next 20 months is for our brothers and sisters in the diaspora to actively engage in the process. We intend, as a transitional government, to put in place the systems, processes and platforms necessary to make the most of these incredible assets,” Conille said at the press conference.
Wilson said they discussed temporary protected status for some Haitian migrants in the United States. She also said she has a list of requests for President Joe Biden’s administration, including ideas for combating gangs that are wreaking havoc.
Gang Prevention
“We talked about prevention; we were surprised to find that 50% to 70% of gang members are little boys,” Wilson said. “They are not adult men as is often believed. »
Haitian delegation to the United States
Conille’s delegation to the United States includes Dominique Dupuy, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Haiti, and Kelteen Florestal, Minister of Finance of Haiti. Their itinerary includes meetings in Washington, DC, and New York.
