The Town Hall of Cap-Haitien asks displaced people from Port-au-Prince and other regions of the country to come and register

The president of the municipal commission of Cap-Haitien, Yvrose Pierre, calls on residents of Port-au-Prince and surrounding areas to register free of charge at the town hall once they arrive in the Capoise city. This initiative aims to better control the city’s population and the internally displaced people who flock to Cap-Haitien, the official told journalists.

In an official press release dated March 19, the town hall of Cap-Haitien stressed the importance of this registration process to guarantee the safety and well-being of the city’s residents.

“We are not here to enforce the laws. It is the police and justice which ensure this responsibility. We work in collaboration with the police and the courts. When we ask someone to come to the register, we do so free of charge. If she chooses to come, she is welcome, otherwise she is free not to come. However, she will have to face the consequences tomorrow”

This move comes as the city of Cap-Haitien faces an unprecedented influx of displaced people, fleeing political unrest and gang violence, particularly in the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince. Local authorities are seeking to better organize the reception and integration of these displaced people while ensuring the safety of local residents.

“With the many people arriving in town, as the Creole proverb says: “Flies are flying, you don’t know bad or bad”. It’s a way of securing the population of Capoise, as well as other people who come to the town”

Faced with this situation, residents of Port-au-Prince and surrounding regions are invited to go to the town hall, where they can provide the necessary information to be officially registered. So far, 410 people from Port-au-Prince have been registered, underlined Yvrose Pierre.

Furthermore, Edwardo Pierre, journalist at Radio Tropikal, in Cap-Haitien, highlighted for the editorial staff of Juno7 the massive arrival of several residents of Port-au-Prince.

“The city is crowded with people. Due to the current situation in the country, there are not many entertaining activities in the city. But every weekend, Boulevard du Cap-Haitien is always crowded, all the bars are full of people. Every day, buses traveling from Port-au-Prince to Cap-Haitien are full. Most of these people are those traveling under the Biden program, they pass through Cap-Haïtien because it is the only place that offers international flights at the airport”

In these times of multiple challenges, the call from the Town Hall of Cap-Haitien for the registration of residents of Port-au-Prince and surrounding regions represents a proactive measure aimed at strengthening social cohesion and ensuring the safety of all the inhabitants of Cap-Haïtien, if we are to believe the officials.
