Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador strongly condemned Ecuador’s “assault” on the Mexican embassy in Quito, calling it an “incredible act” and even likening it to the repression carried out by Augusto Pinochet . In his statements to the media, López Obrador criticized the measure taken by the Ecuadorian authorities, emphasizing that even previous authoritarian regimes, such as that of Pinochet, had not dared to take action of such magnitude.

This statement underlines the seriousness of the incident and highlights its impact not only on a national level, but also on the international stage.

The Mexican president attributed the assault to an internal conflict between the government of Daniel Noboa and politicians linked to former President Rafael Correa. According to López Obrador, the measure taken by the Ecuadorian authorities reflects an arrogant attitude and internal rivalry that led to a hasty decision, without taking into account the repercussions both for its own people and for the international community.

This diplomatic crisis between Mexico and Ecuador intensified following the declaration of personae non gratae to the Mexican ambassador, Raquel Serur, in response to previous comments by López Obrador on political events in Ecuador.

Mexico’s decision to grant political asylum to Jorge Glas, the former Ecuadorian vice president currently imprisoned on corruption charges, triggered the intervention of Ecuadorian forces in the Mexican embassy to arrest him. López Obrador stressed that this act constitutes a flagrant violation of sovereignty, the right to asylum and international standards, which received broad support from the international community.

Additionally, the Mexican president has sharply criticized governments that resort to authoritarian measures, suggesting they are indicative of political weakness or a lack of experience.

He announced Mexico’s intention to denounce Ecuador before the International Court of Justice and send a letter to the Secretary General of the United Nations, in a clear attempt to seek justice and solidarity on the international stage in the face of this violation of democratic principles and international law.
