A further deterioration in acute food insecurity is predicted between June and October 2024, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), which calls for urgent and coordinated action by countries. Haiti is currently the only country in the region experiencing a major and prolonged food crisis, among nine countries in the world at risk of famine.

Faced with this critical situation, FAO estimates it needs $42.6 million to help 528,000 people, but has only received 6% of this funding so far.

Mario Lubetkin, Deputy Director-General of FAO, calls on donors to provide an additional ten million dollars to protect livelihoods and improve access to food for the most vulnerable households.
