A secret ceremony marks the inauguration of the new Haitian government

The “transitional council” is sworn in after the prime minister officially resigns, as gang violence continues to shake the capital.

Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry has officially resigned and a new provisional government has been sworn in in a secret ceremony at the presidential palace, almost two months after a criminal insurrection plunged the capital into chaos.

The “transition council”, composed of nine people, was officially established Thursday during a ceremony organized in secret at the national palace in Port-au-Prince. As its members were being sworn in, Mr. Henry, who is in the United States after being barred from Haiti by the gang insurgency, announced in a letter that he was stepping down.

“We served the nation in difficult times,” wrote Mr. Henry, a neurosurgeon turned politician who came to power after the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021. Mr. Henry announced last month that he was resigning .

Thursday morning’s ceremony was kept secret and not publicly announced due to the threat of violence. The day before the event, reports suggested it would take place at another government property, a mansion on the outskirts of the city.
