Staring into the screen of his laptop, Marco cares very little about what is happening around him. Faced with the chaotic situation in the country, this 22-year-old decided not to give up, not to flee, not to give in but to continue to… study! At the crossroads, there are thousands resisting the sirens of exile to cling to university studies even in this apocalyptic environment.

“Limiting access to education is an age-old strategy used by retrograde elites to discourage young people and more easily keep the population in servitude,” complains Marco, a young sociology student. He deplores the recent armed attacks against universities, particularly the faculty of science. He refuses to get caught in the trap of discouragement. Against all odds, he clings to his studies which he considers to be his only way out, as the only way to achieve a dignified life.

Like Marco, for the few young people who attend the Emmanuel Charlemagne municipal cultural center, the fight is worth it. In Haiti or elsewhere, how can you succeed without being trained? In a country undermined by instability, it takes determination to move forward, thinks Jean Reynald Belance. For this young doctor, young Haitian academics are heroes because Haiti is one of the rare countries where you go to school not knowing if you will return home.

For his part, Abdias, a sociology graduate (FASCH), admits to very often feeling overwhelmed by events. “It’s difficult to make any kind of project,” he says, disappointed by the situation in the country. However, he recognizes that the support of those close to him, particularly his mother, allows him to not give in to discouragement. He is working hard on writing his exit thesis, hoping that a solution to the political crisis will bring peace.

Furthermore, faced with the current sad Haitian reality, it is legitimate for many young people to want to leave the country at all costs. “The problem is that we won’t all be able to leave,” warns Marco. “Sooner or later we will have to assume our responsibility towards this country, even if it costs us our skin.” For his part, Belance advises all those who leave the country to always keep within themselves the feeling of belonging to this corner of the earth. He asks: “What would happen if all the youth left? »

At the crossroads, life is punctuated by the violence of armed gangs. Lives stolen, dreams violated. Youth, the hope of tomorrow, finds itself trapped at the heart of this chaos. But she doesn’t give up and clings to her dreams. With firmness and courage!
