The US State Department released a report on Monday in which it refers to the human rights situation in Colombia and the country’s alarming case in terms of violations and abuses against part of the population within the country.

The summary of this report, published on April 22, documents arbitrary or unlawful executions, including extrajudicial killings, and torture or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, committed by government security forces and armed groups.

In this report, the government of Joe Biden mentioned Nicolás Petro, son of the President of the Republic of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, given the investigations that were carried out against him regarding irregularities in the campaign of his father, the current president of Colombia.

The StateDept assures that the information relating to “irregular funds” paid to the Gustavo Petro campaign, which it described in its report on human rights defenders, is “credible”. See the question and answer: pic.twitter.com/SW9acGa9GR

Juan Camilo Merlano (@JuanCMerlano) April 23, 2024:
“Corruption: The Attorney General’s Office opened investigations against President Petro’s son and brother for allegedly accepting irregular payments, some of which allegedly financed Petro’s 2022 campaign. Administrative corruption at ports facilitated transit of illicit drugs. Journalists who denounce corruption are regularly subject to threats,” the report states.
