The First Lady of Kenya, Rachel Ruto, recently took part in a video conference with gang leader Jimmy Chérizier alias Barbecue, in an alleged context of preparations for the Multinational Security Support Mission (MMSS) which will be deployed in Haiti, according to Christianity Today Magazine.

According to the magazine, Ms. Ruto initiated the creation of a prayer group dedicated to the success of the MMSS in Haiti. A meeting took place in a conference room at the Weston Hotel, bringing together Kenyan, Haitian and American ministerial leaders, as well as Kenya’s first lady, Rachel Ruto. Participants prayed for the success of the security mission in Haiti.

This month, the group of pastors and the first lady’s staff also traveled to the United States, where they met with various stakeholders, including religious, government, and law enforcement officials. and the army. During this trip, a Zoom meeting was organized with the leader of the gang coalition, Barbecue, to better understand the issues and social dynamics that influence security in the country and to understand the specific challenges that the Kenyan police will face in Haiti.

One of the members of the delegation, Serge Musasilwa, mentioned that President Ruto has tasked a team with analyzing the Haitian context to effectively inform law enforcement and increase the chances of success of the security mission. At the same time, the group engaged in meetings with senior Haitian officials, such as Haiti’s ambassador to Qatar, François Guillaume, to study the government structure and legal systems in place.

Furthermore, President Ruto stressed the importance of this mission, affirming that his country has a moral responsibility towards Haiti and that it is essential to learn from past mistakes to guarantee the success of this intervention.

The group’s final report will be presented to the president this month, ahead of a presidential trip to the United States in May, marking the first state visit by an African president to the White House in 16 years.
